What: Hiking path over Kirkeheia
Where: 4887 Grimstad, Norway
Here it is: Start the trip as Hamsun did, at the former Grimstad hospital, the path is today marked with poles over the hill to the church, from where you walk up the street to the letterbox at the former Grefstads jernvare.
The walk is quite steep and offers a fantastic view over the city of Grimstad and over the archipelago. Then try to imagine, how to master the walk when you are over 90....
Hamsun climbed the route during the time, when he was interned at the isolation hospital after the war, the small green building over and behind the actual hospital, and describes the walk so vividly in "On overgrown Paths", that we imagine to partake in the hike ourselves:
"I had come to the other side of the hill and kept on walking until I saw the church tower. Of course I was now on forbidden territory, but if only I could tiptoe far enough - and yet a little more - then I could verify my clock against the church clock. Moreover, I was actually here in search of a letterbox."
The city of Grimstad has published a splendid little guide on the hiking paths with maps and descriptions.
